What are MAC conditions?
MAC refers to three related eye conditions present at birth:
Microphthalmia – meaning “small eye.” One or both eyes are under-developed. Vision can range from severely impaired or absent to partial, depending on severity.
Anophthalmia – meaning “no eye.” One or both eyes are completely absent, and surrounding structures may also develop differently.
Coloboma – where part of the eye’s structure (iris, retina, optic disc, etc.) has a gap because it didn’t form fully during early development. The impact on vision depends on where it occurs.
These conditions develop during pregnancy. In many cases the cause is genetic, and research suggests many different genes may be involved, although the exact cause is still unknown in many cases.
Because the severity varies massively, some people with MAC conditions have partial vision, some have light perception only, and some are blind. Many need ongoing medical support, prosthetics, and specialist care as they grow.
What MACS does
MACS supports children, adults and families affected by MAC conditions across the UK through:
Emotional and practical support
Community events and connection for families
Grants and financial support where needed
Guidance around prosthetics, treatments, education and wider support
Advocacy, awareness, and research funding
MACS provides more than information. They provide community, confidence, and real support for people dealing with rare conditions that can otherwise feel isolating.
